Biography

Barbara Schmelzer Bookbinding provides a comprehensive hand bookbinding service, including wedding albums and wedding guest books, fine binding, experimental and non-adhesive binding, book conservation including book repair and archival storage requirements like phase boxes, envelope folders and the like. My specialties also include portfolios for photographers and graphic designers. Other work includes binding of limited edition series, thesis binding, box making, guest books, logbooks, condolence books, diaries and all other hand binding requirements. All products are handmade and of excellent quality.

Contemporary materials like Plexiglass (acrylic), plasticized paper, plastic foils and the like are some of my favourite materials to work and experiment with.

Weekend workshops and tuition are offered on a regular basis and are held either at my studio or alternative locations including universities, polytechs, or community centres. Courses can be tailored to the specific needs of clients.

CV and Awards:

I studied bookbinding at the Bookbinding College in Stuttgart, Germany and have now over a decade of binding experience, running my own bookbindery in Wellington. To enhance my book conservation skills I attended internships at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Library. My clients in New Zealand include advertising and design companies, photographers, book collectors and dealers, the National Library of New Zealand, the Archives of New Zealand and bibliophiles.
