Bookbinding Courses October 2010/January 2011

All courses are taught by Master Bookbinder Barbara Schmelzer

The courses are limited to 5 participants per course.
A good competency of basic bookbinding techniques is required to participate.

THE SPRINGBACK OR ACCOUNT BOOK BINDING

In this three day course we will take a modern approach to this traditional trade binding. It is a robust binding that allows a book to lie open flat for extended periods of time which makes it an ideal binding structure for account and record books and nowadays for guestbooks, lectern bibles and similarly heavily used books. It could also provide a great binding structure for artists books and fine bindings allowing for a more sculptural approach due to the thick boards.

Cost: $350 (plus material costs as used)
Date: October 15/16/17, 2010 (Fri-Sun) 2010, 9.00am - 5.00pm.

GERMAN VELLUM BINDING

This is a very elegant and beautiful binding with a contemporary approach to vellum decoration. The book is sewn onto vellum tapes which will be pulled through to the outside and become part of the decoration as well as the mechanical structure of the book. The vellum will be decorated according to your design. The binding style teaches a variety of techniques which can be altered to suit and improve other binding methods.

$650 (plus material costs as used)
Date: January 10 - 15, 2011, 9.00am - 5.00pm.

FRENCH LEATHER BINDING

The traditional French leather binding is a full leather binding sewn on cords with handstitched French endbands (or German style if preferred) and leather joints. The book will be rounded and backed to a 90° joint. You will learn the use of paring knives and a paring machine as well as basic sharpening of tools. The books will be titled on the Praegnant titling press.

Cost: $650 (plus material costs as used)
Date: January 24 - 29, 2011, 9.00am - 5.00pm.
