Bookbinding Courses February/March 2010

All courses are taught by Master Bookbinder Barbara Schmelzer

CONSERVATION BINDING

A two day course in which students will sew a book onto cords and put it into a flexible stiff paper cover.  This binding has been developed by the National Library in Amsterdam for a quick and easy binding that can be rebound into leather at a later stage.  This course is suitable for beginners and advanced students. The binding can easily be done at home without many tools or equipment.
Cost: $220 (plus material fee of $25)
Date: 20/21 March 2010
Saturday/Sunday 10.00 am to 4.00

LUXURY CASE BINDING

A luxury/fine case binding with hand stitched silk endbands, reinforced endpapers and head and tail of the case trimmed in leather with the sides covered in decorated paper.  This is a good course to start working with leather as you learn how to use a paring knife and a paring machine to thin out your leather!  For this course you need to be able to confidently execute a case binding.  Materials will be charged separately.

Cost: $240 (incl. GST)
Date: 24 and 25 April 2009,
Saturday/Sunday 9.00 am to 4.00 pm

NON-ADHESIVE BOOKBINDING I

This course provides a good understanding of the basic book structure and familiarises you with creasing, folding, measuring and cutting paper.  It is very suitable for beginners but also of great interest for people working in any of the paper industries.  We make blank sample books of concertina, one-and two-section bindings, trick books and a folded slip case to house the sample books.  All of those books can easily be made at home using basic tools.
Cost: $220 (plus material costs of $25)
Date: 15 and 16 May 2010
Saturday/Sunday, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm

NON-ADHESIVE BOOKBINDING II

Cross-Structure Binding – a simple but effective non-adhesive binding which is easy to execute at home.  We will be using paper bags for the insides – start collecting paper and plastic shopping bags and paper offcuts that you would like to use to make a journal-like book full of paper with memories!  But, of course, you can make a blank journal for other uses.  The course teaches you how to sew multi-section books directly into the cover.

Cost: $120 (plus material costs of $25)
Date: Sunday, 20 June 2010, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm
