Bookbinding Weekend Workshops: Autumn 2006

BRADEL BINDING

The Bradel Binding is a very simple binding which was originally meant to be temporary but has meanwhile become a more permanent binding structure which is easy to execute for amateur bookbinders. We will be making a Bradel Binding with a leather spine and leather corners, covered in paper. Cost of leather to be charged separately.

THREE SEWING METHODS

We will explore different sewing methods whilst making three sample books. This workshop will give you good basic bookbinding skills but is also very useful if you have already got some bookbinding knowledge. All basic materials are provided but students are to bring their own covering papers of appr. 150-200 gsm weight (for example – heavy quality Nepalese Daphne paper) full size sheets (A2). Appropriate paper can be bought at the bindery.

NON-ADHESIVE BOOKBINDING I

This course provides a good understanding of the basic book structure, creasing, folding, measuring and cutting of paper. It is very suitable for beginners but also of great interest for people working in any of the paper industries. We make blank sample books of concertina, one-and two-section bindings, trick books and a folded slip case to house the sample books.

BOX MAKING

This course will give you the basic skills to make most boxes. We will make a drop-back box, mostly used for storage of books, photographs or portfolios and a box with a hinged lid and tray for use on your writing desk. This course is suitable for beginners. All materials are provided.

TEXTILES IN BOOKBINDING

You will learn how to line textiles with Japanese paper and discuss how to use the final product in bookbinding. This course is suitable for beginners and amateurs with some experience. Included are basic materials. Students to provide their own textiles, suited are thin cottons and/or silks and similar thin fabrics (appr. 2 pieces 20 cm x 30 cm). Please call Barbara if you are unsure about the suitability of your fabric.

JAPANESE STYLE PHOTO ALBUM

The Japanese style photo album has a decorative stitching across the spine and will be house in an envelope type enclosure with a ribbon closure. The album will be personalized with embossing. All basic materials are provided. Students are to bring their own covering papers of appr. 150-170 gsm in full size sheets (A2) or they can buy it at the bindery.

CONSERVATION BINDING

A one day course in which students will sew a book onto cords and put it into a flexible stiff paper cover. This binding has been developed by Katinka Keus of the National Library in Amsterdam and can be easily produced at home. This course is suitable for beginners.
